Experience & Skills

I will graduate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in May 2021 with a Bachelor of Science degree. I am majoring in Geography, Cartography/GIS, and Environmental Studies. Since December 2018, I have been employed as a student cartographer at the UWCL. Most of my work at the UWCL requires effective communication with the clients concerning deadlines, design restrictions, and iterative feedback. Many of the maps I make for work at the UWCL are minimally designed and grayscale since they are meant for print books.

The cartography curriculum at UW-Madison acquainted me with important cartographic theory and several workflows for creating different kinds of maps. My basic understanding and experience with scripting languages also comes from the cartography courses. Details about the design processes for my maps can be found on my GitHub page, which also serves as an example of my coding skills. It also has an HTML resume. I have a thorough knowledge of how GIS, vector graphic, and raster graphic softwares work and the general processes for working with them. My geographical awareness is also robust and makes certain problems easier to solve, especially those relating to data interpretation and cleaning. One common struggle that I have between cartography and UX design is in visual aesthetics. Some of my class projects helped me grow as a designer. For example, my final project for Introduction to Cartography at UW-Madison is very top heavy and reminds me to be careful of how I use space.

I presented at the 2018 Midwest Undergraduate Geography Symposium. I surveyed students' personal reasons for choosing to do some pastime activities over others. I submitted a poster to the Wisconsin Land Information Association (WLIA) 2021 annual map contest.

Of my hobbies and interests, teaching has resulted in the most real world experience for me. I am not familiar with pedagogical theory, but I have several years of tutoring experience through high school and college. This has included teaching people as young as eight years old and as old as 21; I worked one-on-one several times before and worked with classrooms of thirty. Most of the material I taught related to academics, but this usually involved assessing student cognition and studying habits in order to help them understand concepts or study more efficiently.

My main volunteering venture has been in homeless outreach, which started in July 2015 when I spearheaded a potluck event for the homeless receiving help from Housing Forward in Oak Park, Il. Homeless outreach in Madison, WI has been a regular activity of mine since December 2017. Almost every time I volunteer, I interact with the homeless face to face.

At UW-Madison, I gained official leadership positions, being the treasurer of the Geography Club in 2018-19, the treasurer of the Running Club in 2019-20, the president of Geography Club in 2019-20 and 2020-21, and the homeless outreach coordinator for Bundle Up in 2019-20 and 2020-21.
